Sunrise and Sunset Photography at Loch Morlich
Show Notes
This is the first of the films that I made back in March before the Coronavirus Pandemic.
At the beginning of the film you may notice that I was quite nervous about where to begin. This was my first time being in front of the camera, and for those that know me, I can be very shy.
The conditions at Loch Morlich that morning could not have been better. It was by far one of the best sunrise’s I have ever witnessed, but I made a few stupid mistakes because I was focusing on filming and I was nervous.
So, please subscribe to my YouTube channel.
The more subscribers, the more motivation I will have and I’ll keep producing as many videos as possible!
I am still quite new to filming for YouTube, so these first few videos are not the best but bear with me as I better understand the filming, editing and other aspects to create a better YouTube space.
Onto the Images…
That was the first image, and if you look very closely you will notice I missed the focus point! It was such a rookie error, but it was my own fault that I forgot to check it before pressing the shutter.
It does happen but usually I realise my mistake and correct while I’m looking at the scene, not 3 hours after the fact!
And I didn’t do it just once either!
All the pictures that morning had the same deficiency and I am still annoyed by my own lack of attention to detail.
The evening was much better, I purposefully made sure the images were in focus and I particularly like the one above with the snowy Cairngorm Mountain and the Northern Corries.
I took the portrait image to try and capture some of that colour rippling across the water, it’s good but it’s not the best and it certainly isn’t helped by the compression artefacts for display on the web. But I just wanted to try and capture those beautiful pinks and purples.
I had a few lessons from this first film, which were important lessons to learn:
Don’t be timid, get in front of the camera and have some fun
Get used to multitasking, not only are you filming for YouTube, you are trying to get some decent images
Focus on one aspect at a time, if the light is changing dramatically focus on the photography and leave the video, after all the photography is what I’m doing this for
Have fun! Stop worrying and just enjoy what you are doing
About the Film
Just a little information about the film and how I made it, as well as some links to equipment.
I edited the film using the Free Version of DaVinci Resolve. It’s an incredibly powerful piece of software that I am still trying to understand and will possibly write an article about in the future.
The music in this video is a track that I licensed from Premium Beats by ShutterStock called:
Atmosphere by Colourfilm Music and The Explorer by Origami Pigeon.
A short Kit List

Main Vlog Camera is a simple Panasonic G80 with the kit lens, its a great little mirrorless camera that I got for the sole purpose of creating YouTube videos. It’s capable of filming in 4k and seems to do everything that I want it to.
Rode Mic, I got this little microphone to boost the audio quality from the inbuilt microphone.
Action Camera, I use this to film myself when walking. It’s a simple DJI Pocket Osmo camera that has a motorised 3 axis gimbal head, which means that I stay in focus and static while the landscape around me moves. It’s also capable of filming in 4k and the audio quality is quite good.
Voice Recorder, to boost the audio quality when it’s windy or I’m using the action camera I use this handy little voice recorder with a lapellier microphone to record audio.
Voice Over Microphone, I use this microphone to do recording at home, so if I forget to mention something or I want to change what I’m talking about I can use this microphone to record in the studio for clear, crisp audio.
For a complete Landscape Photography Kit List you can read through what equipment I take with me when I go out here.
