I’m Daniel Long and I hope you enjoy my photos!
These small mammals live across the mountains of Scotland, and they are impeccably cute. Living in this harsh environment they rely on camouflage from the predators in the sky and so change colour from brown/grey in the summer to white in the winter.
Ospreys are a magnificent migratory bird that make Scotland their home during the Summer months. The only bird of prey to survive solely on fish, others may fish but will have other sources of food such as rabbits and birds. But the Osprey is a specialised feeder, fish and nothing else.
The Monarch of the Glen, these majestic animals live across Scotland in large herds. They can be found throughout the Heather Moors, Mountains and Forests. Their grand antlers are on display only from the Autumn into the Winter, after which they fall off and begin to grow a new set.
This gallery features images of Ptarmigan, Red Grouse, Crested Tit, and other birds that I have photographed in Scotland. You never know what you are going to see. Scotland is full of wildlife and we are privileged to see them.
Scotland is one of the few havens for our native Red Squirrel, elsewhere in the U.K. the population of American Grey Squirrels has wiped out these inquisitive small mammals. The Red Squirrel is smaller and more delicate than they grey, and they thrive in the native pine forests.
I’ve had the wonderful privilege to photograph the elusive Pine Marten at a hide run by James Roddie on the Black Isle near Inverness. Incredibly charismatic animals, especially the young and adorable kits!
