From Location to Print: Landscape Photography in Carrbridge
Show Notes
As I mentioned in my improvised from location to print vlog on Loch Ness, I have been mulling the idea for this type of landscape photography vlog for a while. Carrbridge is the perfect place to create such a video as there is really only one image to be had from the location. I could’ve explored around the village, heading into the woods to find more images but the forest around Carrbridge, while beautiful, is no different to the other forests that I photograph and would not yield an interesting landscape image.
The bridge in the centre of the village is by far the most interesting feature in the landscape, and it makes a great subject to create an image. It is protected by fencing and railings to prevent people from damaging the bridge and from falling into the fast flowing river. So, there are only 2 points from where it is possible to photograph the bridge. In my experience the best point is looking directly at the bridge on the new road bridge that goes through the village.
I went to Carrbridge with the hope, as always, of some sunrise colours above the bridge. Unfortunately the colours of the morning were just too subtle for the camera to pick up, but it was a wonderfully peaceful moment. The village still asleep. I was surprised to find the trees surrounding the bridge burning red in colour and the contrast between them and the cool blue sky of the early morning lent itself perfectly for a colour print.
I edited this image in Lightroom it was fairly easy, but I made one terrible mistake that shows up in the print!
As I am learning how to make videos, with each new one I am proving and creating a better YouTube channel, so please subscribe and follow along on this journey!
Onto the Images
I have always processed this scene as black and white in the past, and it was my intention to do so again that morning but as you can see the vibrant red colours of the tree to the left, and the way those colours contrast with the blues of the sky was justification for leaving it in colour this time.
There wasn’t too much to edit this time, no need for brushes or complicated techniques. The scene was beautifully lit and with some minor adjustments it turned out a great image. But I missed one tiny spot in my spot removal that showed up in the print. That and the fact I didn’t load the paper completely flat meant the print was not perfect but good enough for my collection. The moment captured and stored in a physical thing is wonderful, and makes me crave the day I can return to film!

About the Film
Just a little information about the film and how I made it, as well as some links to equipment.
I edited the film using the Free Version of DaVinci Resolve. It’s an incredibly powerful piece of software that I am still trying to understand and will possibly write an article about in the future.
The tracks featured in today’s film were licensed via a subscription with Epidemic Sound. (By following that link, if you purchase a subscription then I will be gifted with a month free for referring you to their services)

Main Vlog Camera is a simple Panasonic G80 with the kit lens, its a great little mirrorless camera that I got for the sole purpose of creating YouTube videos. It’s capable of filming in 4k and seems to do everything that I want it to.
Rode Mic, I got this little microphone to boost the audio quality from the inbuilt microphone.
Action Camera, I use this to film myself when walking. It’s a simple DJI Pocket Osmo camera that has a motorised 3 axis gimbal head, which means that I stay in focus and static while the landscape around me moves. It’s also capable of filming in 4k and the audio quality is quite good.
Voice Recorder, to boost the audio quality when it’s windy or I’m using the action camera I use this handy little voice recorder with a lapellier microphone to record audio.
